DVIRs — Digital Vehicle Inspections

Last updated: April 2026

What Is a DVIR?

A Daily Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) is a federally required inspection record that drivers complete to document the condition of their vehicle. It's required by FMCSA under 49 CFR Part 396.11 and 396.13.

Truck Genie's digital DVIR replaces paper inspection forms with a mobile app that drivers can complete in under a minute.

Regulatory Update On February 19, 2026, FMCSA finalized the Electronic DVIR rule, explicitly confirming that digital DVIRs are approved. Truck Genie's DVIR module is designed to satisfy all requirements under the current regulations.

How Drivers Submit a DVIR

1

Open the Truck Genie Mobile App

Drivers log in with their personal credentials. The app is available on both iOS (App Store) and Android (Google Play).

2

Select Their Unit

The driver selects which truck they're inspecting from their assigned units.

3

Walk Through the Inspection

The app guides the driver through each inspection point: brakes, steering, lighting, tires, horn, windshield wipers, coupling devices, emergency equipment, and any company-specific items. For each item, the driver marks it as satisfactory or reports a defect.

4

Report Any Defects

If a defect is found, the driver describes it. The defect is immediately flagged and visible to fleet managers and mechanics — no waiting for someone to read a piece of paper.

5

Sign and Submit

The driver signs digitally and submits the report. It's timestamped, stored, and immediately available in the Truck Genie dashboard.

For Fleet Managers: Reviewing DVIRs

All submitted DVIRs appear in your dashboard. You can filter by unit, date range, or defect status. When a defect is reported, you'll see it flagged immediately — allowing you to route it to a mechanic or create a work order before the problem escalates.

Compliance Requirements

To stay compliant with FMCSA regulations, ensure that:

Important Truck Genie is a tool to assist with DVIR compliance. The fleet owner and driver remain solely responsible for ensuring all inspections are performed properly and all regulatory requirements are met. Truck Genie does not guarantee compliance — it makes compliance easier.
